Weapons Factory with a Roblox Twist

Updated: Sep 15, 2023

Authentic Q2WF Experience

Back in the day, Weapons Factory had several servers that you could chose using a program called GameSpy.

Typically, you'll join the server that shows the best ping and then over time you became familiar with those players in that specific server because you played all the time. They became.. your gamer family. This was the order of operations:

  1. Join the server

  2. Choose the red or blue team

  3. Select a class from a simple UI

  4. Immediately spawn

  5. Play CTF and have fun

This is the authentic UI experience of Q2WF to get into the game and start playing.

Roblox is a social platform at its core

To maintain this aspect and easily introduce this game to a younger audience that learns by doing, not by selection in the UI... By default Players will join and spawn as their Roblox avatar in a Weapons Factory flavored “Lobby” space that perhaps might bring back some nostalgia. Each Lobby space would allow about 50 players per server, depending on performance.

Players will have the option to configure their play experience to always auto-join a random or specific type of game with an open slot that just want to get in and play, and their friends can join them as usual from the Roblox "join friends game" feature.

The Main Lobby

The "Main Lobby" will contain several rooms or zones, some safe, and some not. A safe zone means not allowing usage of any weapons or skills at all. These zones have different purposes.

Ladder/Trophies for Competition

The “Ladder/Trophy” zone is dedicated to showing players what clan, players, or groups are at the top of the ladders for the different kinds of gameplay, things like most flags captured, most kills, most self inflicted rocket kills, highest rocket jump, fasted obstacle course completion, whatever information to disperse out into the community for fun, for others to be encouraged to try and reach.

Class Selection and Tutorials

The “Class Selection” zone is dedicated to introducing the 10 different classes a player can choose from to test it out. Each class is represented by a transparent “Cylindrical Slot” placed in the world, with the name of the Class above it with animated visuals demonstrating primary skills being utilized for that class. When the player walks into the cylindrical slot space of a specific class, that player becomes equipped as that class spec and some cosmetic changes occur to indicate that class type. R6 style rigs will likely not be supported, offhand..only R15 style rigs.

Obby with Quake Physics

The “Obby” zone is where players can teleport into a fun “obstacle course” or “obby” play space for the players to get a feel of that class they chose, and is easily accessible from the “Class Selection” zone. This is a friendly, non pvp zone, where you can hit dummy targets for practice, and practice the physics of the game within a tailored course. The players have access to teleport back out into the class selection room if desired, to change a class and port back into the Obby Zone for practice. If the Obby Zone is popular, many custom Obby Maps *might* be created.

Deatmatch Arena

The “PVP” zone is where players can teleport into a PVP zone to test the chosen class against a player, kind of like a deathmatch arena. It will consist of a “Mid” section of a map that is enclosed, until death. They will respawn on the outside, be able to walk into a safezone, and walk through into the pvp deathmatch arena. This is a one way L entrance. If the PVP Zone is popular, many custom Deathmatch Arena maps *might* be created.

Capture the Flag

And then the golden “CTF” zone, where players can have access to walk into rooms to play a classic WF match with a specific number of players, including their friends, or clan vs clan match where others can spectate or watch. Optionally, a teleport to join a random game server and not care who you play with.

All of which is subject to change, however this is the mindset that I'm running with for now.
